WAGGGS and The World Centres

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, or WAGGGS, is the world’s largest
voluntary movement dedicated to girls and young women, with 10 million members belonging to
145 national organizations. WAGGGS’ mission is to enable girls and young women to develop
their full potential as responsible citizens of the world. Through non-formal education, global
awareness, and community and advocacy programmes, WAGGGS focuses on leadership
development and active citizenship.

Crucial to this mission are the WAGGGS World Centres: Our Chalet, in Switzerland; Our
Cabaña, in Mexico; Pax Lodge, in England; Sangam, in India; and a fifth World Centre, currently
being piloted in Africa. The World Centres are residential development centres where girls
and young women can broaden their leadership and life skills through international friendship,
challenge, adventure, and self-development. They are the international homes for the millions
of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world, offering not only the opportunity for fun and
friendship but also the possibility for girls and young women to discover their potential, share
experiences, and gain a deeper understanding of the global community in which they live.

The setting for Our Cabaña in Mexico is spectacular, with each building set in its own tropical garden, overlooking the city of Cuernavaca and surrounded by distant snow-capped volcanoes. Activities give a colourful experience of Mexican culture, food, language and arts and crafts, and include discussions of WAGGGS themes and current worldwide issues and helping a local community project.

Our Chalet is the oldest WAGGGS World Centre. It opened in 1932 as a place where girls and
adults from all over the world could come together and share the Girl Guide/Girl Scout Spirit.
Situated in the beauty of the Swiss Alps, Our Chalet focuses on offering opportunities to youth
and adults to get close to nature as well, as develop their fullest potential through outdoor
challenge.
