CSW 57

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the body that focuses on gender equality at the United Nations. Every year, representatives of UN Member States gather to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide.

This year Member States will come together to discuss the ‘Elimination and Prevention of violence against women and girls’. This is an important opportunity for WAGGGS to showcase the Stop the Violence campaign and all the incredible work our Member are doing on this issue.

This event will take place inNew York,USAfrom 4 – 15 March 2013.

What do WAGGGS delegates do?

Pre-Conference: WAGGGS delegates will take part in pre-event training and tasks and do independent research to build their knowledge and skills. They will connect with their national governments and begin lobbying.

Conference: WAGGGS delegates will follow and track negotiations, participate at side events, use blogging, social media and do interviews to share their experiences. They will work with youth from around the world to raise awareness and take action to make our voices heard.

Post-Conference: WAGGGS delegates will use the knowledge and contacts they gain to develop and implement an action plan to tackle climate change on a local level when they return home.

COP 18

The United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was signed by countries worldwide almost 20 years ago and today it has near-universal membership. Each year the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC meets to agree upon a way forward in dealing with man-made climate change within the UN framework, including the Kyoto Protocol. At COP 18 countries will come together once again in Doha, Qatar to try to reach agreement and sign a global deal to reduce human impact on the climate system and adapt to the inevitable impacts of a changing climate.

WAGGGS knows that climate change affects us all, is happening now and that we need to act now. We have been attending these conferences since COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009 to speak out for the rights of Girls and Young Women and directly engage with decision-makers at a global level. COP is also an opportunity for WAGGGS members to promote their Member Organizations and personal climate change projects.
