Door Step School

Doorstep School was founded in 1988 by a group of professional social workers, both academics and practitioners. The idea of forming an organisation fully devoted to education was born through experience of working with the public school system and the slum communities in urban areas.

The Municipal government provides a large number schools in Pune. However, there are problems of stagnation and non-achievement among the school children. One of the reasons is that many of the children are first generation learners. With the increasing awareness of the need for education, most parents plan for the education of their children but for those whose priority is keeping a roof over their head and food on their plates, education falls low on their list of priorities. Intervention on the part of Doorstep School is, to sustain children in school, and to improve their level of achievement and participation. The group targets children between 3 and 18 years of age, offering support systems such as study classes, literacy classes, community and reference libraries, mobile literacy classes for children living on the streets and non-formal fun activities.
