Make some noise for Rio+20

1 Junio 2012

From 11 to 22 June, 24 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts will represent WAGGGS at the UN's Rio+20 sustainability conference. You can support them now by taking action from home to spread our environmental message.

Our delegates will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil later this month, but we need girls and young women around the world to take action now to make our message as strong as possible.

The UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon has asked young people around the world to ”make some noise for our planet and its future”. Let’s see how much noise Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world can make while our delegates are in Rio!

Find out more about Rio+20 and the WAGGGS delegation in our special Rio+20 website section.

Six actions you can take

Write to your government

Write to your head of state, or your department for the environment, about why Rio+20 matters and what they should be aiming to achieve there. You can download and send our template letter, which includes the WAGGGS key messages for the conference. You can download a template letter to send here.

Join our environmental action march

On 20 June we will stage an environmental action march on behalf of all the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts across the world. We are adding one step to our march for each environmental action that girls and young women complete. Read more and find out how you can contribute your actions.

Make some noise on 20 June

Make some noise wherever you are on 20 June! Get together with friends, decide how you will make your noise, and take a picture or video to send to us at webeditor@wagggs.org. Make sure people know why you are making a noise and why Rio +20 matters.

Join the online Rio+20 Dialogues

The Rio+20 Dialogues are an online platform where you can contribute to the sustainability debate and vote for the recommendations you think should be put forward. Read more about the Rio+20 Dialogues.

Follow our online updates

Regular updates from the Rio+20 delegates will be published on the delegates’ blog and Twitter account, as well as the WAGGGS Facebook page. Follow our progress in Rio and we’ll let you know what else you can do to spread the WAGGGS key messages.

Take action in your community

Sustainable development has to start locally. Run an activity in your local area from our World Thinking Day activity pack and encourage others to think about how they can live more sustainably. Email harriet@wagggs.org to let us know what action you’ve taken so that we can count it towards our action march!
