The World We Want for our Future

Sangam’s contribution to the WAGGGS consultation
#GirlsSaveOurPlanet

World We Want For Our Future 01

At Sangam, we are committed to the idea of achieving MDG 7, the UN Millennium Development Goal
aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. In our quest to spread the word about how young people
can help save our planet, we have been promoting the recently released WAGGGS consultation, “The
World We Want for our Future”. In the consultation, we are asking young people from around the world
how they can make positive changes in order to lead happy, healthy, sustainable lives and develop
their full potential as responsible citizens of the world. WAGGGS will use the information we collect in
preparing for our delegation at Rio+20, the upcoming UN conference on environmental sustainability, as
well as in several other related initiatives.

Even though the consultation comes from WAGGGS, anyone between the ages of 7 and 25 can take
part! We are asking girls and boys, young women and young men how they want the world to look in the
future and collecting the information in both a traditional survey and in creative visualizations.

When we ran the consultation at Sangam, we came up with a wide variety of responses. Our consultation
group included fifteen young women from seven countries: India, UK, USA, Canada, Kenya, Australia,
and Costa Rica. Here are just a few of the responses we got, including examples of our creative
visualizations.

“In the world we want, there will be:

World We Want For Our Future 03

  • Alternative transportation (see picture of a solar-powered car)
  • A preserved environment
  • Clean water
  • An adequate food supply”

“In the world we don’t want, there will be:

World We Want For Our Future 02

  • Sickness (see picture)
  • An environment which does not support healthy life
  • No animals
  • No clean water”

“What is missing in this picture?

  • Global clean water
  • Equality and protection for minorities (including the LGBTQ population)
  • World peace/an end to violence and wars
  • Global mental health support”

“What do we need to protect the most?

  • Children, because they are the future
  • Health, to grow support for the future
  • Human Rights, because it is important to ensure rights and equal treatment and to recognize
  • differences”

Here at Sangam, we are committed to achieving environmental sustainability. We are embracing the 2012 World Thinking Day theme of MDG7 and using this opportunity to educate our participants and staff in environmental issues.
